Ikigai. And The Art of Not Finding It

We’re all searchers, you and I.

Seekers striving to make sense of this crazy, beautiful existence.

Scratching and clawing for some kind of profound purpose to anchor ourselves to when the winds of life howl fierce. Something to pour ourselves into fully and completely until our souls feel sated, our beings aligned.

A reason to throw ourselves into each new day without reservation.

That’s what ikigai represents, doesn’t it?

The tantalizing promise of unearthing your holy grail of wholehearted living. Of trading emptiness and apathy for electrifying passion and clarity. Of looking in the mirror and seeing yourself as vital, essential, a person of consequence whose actions reverberate meaningfully.

So we become obsessed with finding it, this elusive ikigai. We devour books, watch TED talks, take quizzes, all in hopes of unlocking that magic formula to imbue our hours with immense significance.

To finally, finally attain that sense of conviction that our time on this Earth matters in the deepest way.

And when the crisp, clean Venn diagram reveals itself – that tidy intersection where our loves, talents, societal impact, and income potential are meant to coalesce into ikigai perfection – we feel it in our bones:

Yes! This is it! The path has been illuminated!

If I can just walk this shining road, I’ll live out my days in utter purposefulness!

Except…life and ikigai don’t actually work that way, do they?

The Beautiful, Messy Truth We Don’t Want to Accept

For as much as we crave the perfect ikigai, the inconvenient truth is very few of us wayward souls will ever experience it in its consummate form. That idealized bulls-eye where all our loves, skills, impacts, and breadwinning align in a single exquisite through-line.

It’s like being dealt a handful of scattered tiles and being told to create a pristine, seamless mosaic.

No matter how we fiddle and adjust, there will always be some pieces that don’t quite fit, some elements where the overlay is imperfect. Gaps, mismatched edges, colors slightly askew.

Yet we spend so much precious time and mental energy fixated on solving for this mythical ikigai riddle. Agonizing over why the pieces won’t unite just so. Feeling like failures, like we haven’t self-actualized properly because our lives didn’t coalesce into some fine-pressed paradigm of purpose.

But friend, can I tell you a secret?

Ikigai isn’t meant to be some ultimate prize to latch onto. It was never intended as a rigid cross-section to either attain or miss out on. That’s a Western interpretation that strips away the beautiful nuance baked into this Japanese philosophy.

To the Okinawan elders who bestowed this gift of ikigai upon the world, it represented so much more than just a career destination or unified raison d’etre to strive for.

It was about the incessant journey itself.

The ceaseless questioning and evolving.

The refusal to lead a life basted in complacency, but to greet each sunrise as an opportunity to flex new curiosities, welcome unfurling passions, uncover surprising aptitudes, and unearth avenues for contribution that reverberate outward in intentional ways.

It was about weaving your own unique tapestry of ikigai – one that may shift in pattern and palette over the epochs, but always emanates vitality, growth, generosity, and wonder.

What a tremendous disservice we’ve done ourselves by allowing the seductive simplicity of that ubiquitous Venn diagram to whittle ikigai down into such narrow, career-focused parameters. Into some sort of tidy, terminal self-actualization finish line that you either cross triumphantly or fall crumpled and unsated before.

By getting so hung up on finding that one magnificent, immutable crossroads, we starve ourselves of all the smaller yet profound pockets of ikigai trailed throughout our actual lives like breadcrumb trails of joy.

The true magic is in the assembling of all our ever-shifting ikigai ingredients, honoring them each as essential squibs of fire to stoke our innermost furnaces.

To ignore the profound senses of life-forcefulness we feel:

  • When we completely lose ourselves in joyous rapture, consumed by the gripping passions that have bloomed in our souls in that moment – playing music, painting, baking, gardening, or any other all-consuming expressions of love.
  • When we explore and hone the skills that make us come alive with purposefulness, those endeavors where we enter cadenced grooves of virtuosic focus and flow, shocking even ourselves with what we’re capable of.
  • When we find ways, both visible and invisible, to contribute our unique souls to the world and chisel away at its tougher edges – through kindnesses, service, modeling values, or adding accretive beauty wherever our circles overlapped.
  • When we earn daily bread doing work that honors our authentic skills and strengths – whether it aligns perfectly with our other ingredients or represents one harmonic yet imperfectly overlapping piece of ourselves that helps facilitate a life palette we can authentically lean into.

To ignore those ever-present, ever-flitting ikigai embers banked within us is to forsake actualizing ourselves in the most intimate and revertant ways.

The most tragic failure is not whether we attain a single unified career or purpose that ticks every ikigai element. It’s in stifling all the smaller yet explosive pops of ikigai that we deny ourselves along the way.

So be free of that limited paradigm, dear wanderers! Free of the shackles that would constrain your ikigai down to one clean, tightly prescribed definition. Free to realize your wholehearted reason for being in this breathtaking existence.

Your ikigai is in stoking all the varied inner fires that flare to roaring life at different phases and in different contexts throughout your journey.

In curating your own cosmic recipe of meaning and fulfillment and never letting the flames dampen or dim.

In savoring every high-vibrating note within the improvised jazz symphony of your life’s work.

Even when the score seems disjointed or chaotic, find the purposeful flow that makes your soul rejoice in its part to play.

So keep seeking, keep exploring, keep fanning the sparks that turn your spirit incandescent, again and again. Even when the reasons seem to scatter like fireflies blinking out.

For therein lies the true art of ikigai: Honoring your forever-shifting constellations of purpose while celebrating your place among the infinite stars.
